Donor Funeral Portal

A dedicated area to guide you through the funeral arrangements for your loved one

We are the funeral directors contracted by the London & South East Committee of anatomists, to arrange and conduct the funerals for those who have kindly donated their bodies to medical education and training.

The anatomical examination for your loved one is now completed and so we are here to guide you through the funeral arrangement. Please take a look around your funeral portal and feel free to call the team at any time.

NEED HELP?

You can contact us at any stage for help:

What happens to the ashes?

Your loved one’s will normally be available for collection from 10.00am on the second working day following the funeral, unless prior notice is given that they are required sooner.

The crematorium makes no charge the collection of cremated remains and also provides a biodegradable cardboard container for the cremated remains. You may request for the ashes to be transferred into a different urn of your choice.

Please let us know if you are planning to take your love one’s ashes abroad, as the urn must first be sealed for international travel and additional documents provided. There is an additional charge of £40 for the sealing and documents.

Your Instructions

Medical School Cremation Flowers

Please see below options available to adorn your loved one’s coffin for their cremation funeral service. All of our flower arrangements are will be lovingly prepared by our partner and local florists, Bloxhams.

Your choice of arrangement in your chosen flower type and preferred colour will be ready in the hearse carrying your loved one’s coffin prior to the service on the day. Following the cremation service, the flowers will be taken to the area displaying the memorial stone for all those who have kindly donated their bodies to medical education. You are also welcome to take these arrangements with you.

Please note the photos are illustrative only and you are able to specify any of the flower types and a colour scheme for a fully bespoke flower arrangement

Medical School Cremations

Medical school cremations include a 10-minute committal service that takes place between 08.30am – 10:30am, usually on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at Croydon Crematorium West Chapel. The chapel has a traditional design, with a vaulted ceiling and wooden pews. Wherever possible we will take into consideration requests for certain dates and times but regret that it may not be possible to change the date or the time for your loved one’s service.

Wherever possible the service will be conducted by a chaplain from the medical schools, as they have some understanding of working with the medical school, and the students, and therefore, the benefits of body donation. A local minister or celebrant may be asked to officiate in the absence of a medical school chaplain. If you have indicated that you wish to attend, your contact details will be given to the officiant who will contact you prior to the cremation to talk about your wishes for the committal service, such as the music and eulogy.

You may have 2 pieces of music during the committal, one as your loved one’s coffin is carried into the chapel and second at the final stage of the service as the coffin is lowered. Please note that once the music has been confirmed we can only make changes to the choices up to 12noon on the day before the cremation date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Croydon Crematorium is located within the grounds of Croydon Cemetery at Mitcham Rd, London CR9 3AT. If you are driving to the crematorium, please use post code CR0 3AA for the Mitcham Road entrance. There is a large car park with disabled parking adjacent to the chapel. If you are coming by train, the nearest station is East Croydon. From here you will need to take the Tram towards Wimbledon, and alight at Therapia Lane. The crematorium is a 500 meter walk from the tram station. The Bus Numbers that run to the crematorium are 64, 109, 198, 250, 264 or 289.

Unfortunately, no more than 10 mourners attend the service due to the time restrictions and the risk of delaying subsequent services. If you would like to involve a larger number of people, you may wish to consider some kind of memorial service at a later date when you have their ashes.

All mourners should arrive 10 minutes before the given time. There is waiting room available which is situated next to the entrance to the West Chapel. Our Funeral Conductor will introduce themselves to you to discuss any special requests and answer any questions that you may have. At the specified time your loved one’s coffin will be conveyed to the chapel doors by a motorised hearse with our Conductor walking ahead. You will be asked to take your seats within the chapel before your loved one is carried through to the front by our team of 4 pall bearers. The funeral, although simple, is carried out with quiet dignity, and the short committal service is only for your loved one. The total service time is 10 minutes which includes the entry and exit of mourners, which provides approximately 7 or 8 minutes in the Chapel. After the committal, our Conductor will guide you to the exit and escort you to the Medical School memorial plaque where any flowers can be then placed.

As soon as you have completed the details within the “Edit Details” area of this portal, we will share your instructions with your officiant who will most likely contact you around 1 week prior to the service.

You are welcome to purchase a floral tribute for the funeral service, though we ask that only one tribute is purchased for the funeral given the short nature of the service. We have attached our full flowers brochure for you should you wish to view the options. You are also welcome to bring any floral tributes with you on the day of the cremation. Our Funeral Director will meet you and discuss how you would like these to be presented and take them from you.

We regret to say that unfortunately it is not possible for the cremation service to be recorded or streamed live.

At the time you completed the Disposal Instructions HTA(A) 1 form with the London Anatomy Office you would have indicated if you wished to take possession of the ashes. It is appreciated that you may wish to change your mind, and this is completely understandable. We will send you directly a form headed “Change of Instruction” to re-confirm your wishes for the ashes, so that we can ensure your instructions are followed. If you have opted to take possession of the ashes, please be aware that you are not able to collect the ashes on the day of the service. They will be available for collection from 48 hours of the date of the service. We appreciate that you may have travelled far to attend the service and/or Croydon may not be a convenient location for you to collect your loved one’s ashes. We are able to provide you with a courier service to hand deliver your loved one’s ashes directly to your house. The timing and cost of this will depend on each individual location and circumstance, however, please do get in contact with us if this may be helpful.
