Medical school cremations include a 10-minute committal service that takes place between 08.30am – 10:30am at Croydon Crematorium West Chapel

About Medical School Cremations

Medical school cremations include a 10-minute committal service that takes place between 08.30am – 10:30am, usually on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at Croydon Crematorium West Chapel. The chapel has a traditional design, with a vaulted ceiling and wooden pews. Unfortunately, within the provisions of the Medical Schools, we have very little control over the date and time of the funeral and it is unlikely we will be able to change this for you.

Wherever possible the service will be conducted by a chaplain from the medical schools, as they have some understanding of working with the medical school, and the students, and therefore, the benefits of body donation. A local minister or celebrant may be asked to officiate in the absence of a medical school chaplain. If you have indicated that you wish to attend, your contact details will be given to the officiant who will contact you prior to the cremation to talk about your wishes for the committal service, such as the music and eulogy.

You may have 2 pieces of music during the committal, one as your loved one’s coffin is carried into the chapel and second at the final stage of the service as the coffin is lowered. Please note that once the music has been confirmed we can only make changes to the choices up to 12noon on the day before the cremation date.

Provide Funeral Instructions

Please provide your instructions for your loved one’s funeral. These instructions will be shared with your officiant. If you are planning to attend, your officiant will be in contact to help you plan for the day.

Your Instructions For The Ashes

The ashes must be sealed and specific documents provided. There is a charge of £40 for this

You can see our full range of urns available for purchase below

Please note that any jewellery should be requested to be returned prior to the cremation through the London Anatomy Office directly. Any metals that are returned with the ashes are predominantly derived from the coffin fixings. Metals can be separated from the ashes however if you wish for these to be returned within the ashes, please also note it will not be possible for you to later scatter them.

We must provide the specific name to the crematorium as this person will need to bring ID with them in order to release the ashes

Ashes can not be sent within traditional mail and so we must hand deliver the ashes directly to your door

A flexible date means we will notify you 72 hours prior and our driver will be completing multiple deliveries on the same day, allowing the cost to be lower. If a chosen date is important, the delivery cost will be higher

We will send you a separate Ashes Instructions Form to be digitally signed with your instructions for the ashes. This must be submitted to Croydon Crematorium at least three working days before the funeral and the service cannot go ahead without it.

Live Streaming The Funeral

If you, or any family and friends, are not able to make it to the funeral on the day, it is possible to live stream the service for others to follow along online. Croydon uses a system called Obitus to provide a live webcast of the funeral.

This webcast can be viewed for a further 28 days after the funeral and you will also receive a download link as a keepsake if you wish.

You can purchase a live stream below. We will take care of all of the setup and will share your unique link, username and password for the stream.

How are my loved one's ashes returned?

Your loved one’s will normally be available for collection from 10.00am on the second working day following the funeral, unless prior notice is given that they are required sooner.

The crematorium makes no charge the collection of cremated remains and also provides a biodegradable cardboard container for the cremated remains. You may request for the ashes to be transferred into a different urn of your choice and we have provided a range of options to view below.

Please let us know if you are planning to take your love one’s ashes abroad, as the urn must first be sealed for international travel and additional documents provided. Croydon will seal your loved ones ashes in a Polyurn and there is an additional charge of £40 for the sealing and documents.

We will send you a separate Ashes Instructions Form to be digitally signed with your instructions for the ashes. This must be submitted to Croydon Crematorium at least three working days before the funeral and the service cannot go ahead without it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Croydon Crematorium is located within the grounds of Croydon Cemetery at Mitcham Rd, London CR9 3AT. If you are driving to the crematorium, please use post code CR0 3AA for the Mitcham Road entrance. There is a large car park with disabled parking adjacent to the chapel. If you are coming by train, the nearest station is East Croydon. From here you will need to take the Tram towards Wimbledon, and alight at Therapia Lane. The crematorium is a 500 meter walk from the tram station. The Bus Numbers that run to the crematorium are 64, 109, 198, 250, 264 or 289.

Unfortunately, no more than 10 mourners attend the service due to the time restrictions and the risk of delaying subsequent services. If you would like to involve a larger number of people, you may wish to consider some kind of memorial service at a later date when you have their ashes.

All mourners should arrive 10 minutes before the given time. There is waiting room available which is situated next to the entrance to the West Chapel. Our Funeral Conductor will introduce themselves to you to discuss any special requests and answer any questions that you may have. At the specified time your loved one’s coffin will be conveyed to the chapel doors by a motorised hearse with our Conductor walking ahead. You will be asked to take your seats within the chapel before your loved one is carried through to the front by our team of 4 pall bearers. The funeral, although simple, is carried out with quiet dignity, and the short committal service is only for your loved one. The total service time is 10 minutes which includes the entry and exit of mourners, which provides approximately 7 or 8 minutes in the Chapel. After the committal, our Conductor will guide you to the exit and escort you to the Medical School memorial plaque where any flowers can be then placed.

As soon as you have completed the details within the “Your Instructions” area of this portal, we will share your instructions with your officiant who will most likely contact you around 1-2 week prior to the service.

You are welcome to purchase a floral tribute for the funeral service, though we ask that only one tribute is purchased for the funeral given the short nature of the service. You can view our range of flowers offered by our local florist Bloxhams and you are also welcome to bring any floral tributes with you on the day of the cremation. Our Funeral Director will meet you and discuss how you would like these to be presented and take them from you.

Yes it is possible for the service to be live streamed. The price for livestreaming and watch again for 28 days is £75, then for a link to download the service is an extra £10. Please enquire if you would like to order this for the service.

Although you would have previously indicated to the London Anatomy Office if you wished to take possession of your loved one’s ashes, it is appreciated that you may wish to change your mind, and this is completely understandable, therefore we will confirm your wishes with you again. The crematorium also requests a completed form with your wishes confirmed which is called the ‘Ashes Instruction Form’, which we will help to complete and send to you for your electronic signature. The options for the ashes instructions are as follows; You can collect the ashes directly from the crematorium (please be aware that you are not able to collect the ashes on the day of the service), they can be scattered in the memorial garden at the crematorium, or we can collect the ashes on your behalf and deliver them to you. The date of delivery and cost of hand-delivering the ashes will depend on your location, however, please do get in contact with us if you would like a quote.
