Obituary

About Margot's Life

  • A note from Jamie Badminton – I’m very sad to share the news that Margot Grimwood passed away on the evening of Monday 31st July, very peacefully, after a short stay in hospital at the age of 92. She was such a funny, wild and sparky lady that I was SO lucky to call a very close friend. She loved all her friends in the animation and arts community dearly, and I’m so proud of how she stayed strong for 15 years after her beloved Pat Raine Webb’s passing.
  • She marched at the first EVER Pride march in London, attended the first Rolling Stones and early Queen gigs at London’s Marquee Club (amongst SO many other legendary musicians, always present in the front row as part of the Marquee 12, who attended absolutely everything!!)… She helped backstage at the legendary Lindsay Kemp Dance/Mime Company for years, befriending a young Kate Bush, and was one of the very first to hear Wuthering Heights, played to her on piano before it was released. She was front row for Princess Diana’s ballet dance with Wayne Sleep, and attended screenings at the BFI National Film Theatre from day one, for what must have been 71 consecutive years!
  • Going further back, she was evacuated during WW2 for 6 months before coming back to live amongst wartime London, where she met Pat at school, age 11, bonding over their deep love of films. They were inseparable for 66 amazing years, and she continued to hold a torch so brightly for her. She succeeded Pat as President of ASIFA UK for as long as she was able to.
  • Probably her favourite place in the world was Annecy for the Animation Festival, attending every single year between 1983- 2019 (even the years in between when biannual) and was also a valued part of the Bradford/Manchester Animation Festival Community. She also attended every Karrot Animation party that she could up until last Christmas, and I thank all of our crew at the studio for always making her feel so welcome. In recent years, when it’s been harder to go out regularly, she absolutely adored discovering the joys of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which we always watched together!
  • She was so serene at the very end and I was so grateful to be there with my partner James as she slipped away yesterday. She’d want to send so much love to everyone she knew, and had adventures with all around the world. The lovely photo on this page is from just last year at the local cafe in Norbury after a fresh haircut, and is one of my favourites.
  • RIP Margot – she lived the fullest life she possibly could have, I think, and was very loved.
