The cemetery is formal in design, and is the only Victorian cemetery to use a consistent Renaissance style. The buildings and layout are by Benjamin Baud. A public competition to design the cemetery was won by Benjamin Baud, who designed a classical conception with dramatic vistas and spaces to overcome the flat and unvaried nature of the site.
