About Ince-in-Makerfield Cemetery
Ince-in-Makerfield Cemetery was consecrated in 1857 on Warrington Road in Lower Ince and is one of the most architecturally distinguished of the Wigan Council cemeteries. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, the eminent Victorian architect responsible for the Natural History Museum in London and Manchester Town Hall, among many other major public buildings. Two Gothic mortuary chapels (Protestant and Catholic/Dissenters) by Waterhouse survive on the site, though neither is in active use for services. The cemetery is now full and closed to all new burial and cremated remains plot applications.
