About Tonge Cemetery
Tonge Cemetery is Bolton's oldest and most historically significant cemetery, having opened on 31 December 1856. Covering 29 acres and designed by William Henderson, it is Grade II listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, a recognition of its outstanding Victorian landscape design. The surviving Gothic Revival Church of England chapel by architect Charles Holt is a notable architectural feature. The cemetery holds approximately 116,000 burial records and is the resting place of Fred Dibnah, the celebrated steeplejack and television personality.
Grave leases are provided from 99 years, with extensions usually available from the cemetery.
