The Funeral Expenses Payment is a government grant to help with funeral costs. This tool checks whether you may be eligible — it takes around 2–5 minutes.
Who can claim?
You (or your partner) must be receiving a qualifying benefit, and be one of the following:
- Partner — spouse, civil partner, or cohabiting partner
- Immediate family — parent or adult child
- Close relative — brother or sister (including half/step)
Other relatives or friends may claim only if no one above is eligible.

The DWP reviews the application and may contact you if it needs any further information.

Grant provided
Eligible claims can include up to £1,000 toward other funeral expenses, plus necessary crematorium or cemetery costs.
If your eligibility is confirmed, we can usually wait for the DWP payment and continue arranging the funeral without delaying it.
