Dr Haiyan Wang was born on March 15, 1969, in Xi’an. In September 1987, she began her undergraduate studies in the field of electronics engineering at Northwestern Polytechnical University and later worked for an electronics company in Xi’an after graduation.
In the autumn of October 1993, she met her future husband, Xinzhong Li, and they happily tied the knot in January 1995. A year later, their son, Zhihan, was born. After a brief and sweet life as a family of three in Xi’an, she and her husband embarked on a series of overseas academic and work experiences starting in 1999. They first stayed in South Africa for a year and then moved to Berlin, Germany. Their two years in Berlin were happy and fulfilling, with her husband working at a pharmaceutical company and Haiyan serving as a research assistant at the renowned Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics. In July 2003, the family moved to London, where they settled down for a period of 20 years.
Haiyan is a wise and capable woman who has dedicated decades to her family, supporting her husband and raising her child. After her son started secondary school, she graduated with distinction from Imperial College London with a master’s degree in computer science in 2009. Following a brief stint in software development at Honeywell (UK), she received a full EPSRC scholarship to return to Imperial College London for a Ph.D. in computer science under the supervision of Prof. Daniel Rueckert. She successfully defended her Ph.D. in August 2015. She then worked as a research officer at the London School of Economics (LSE) before joining Tracr (De Beers) in 2018 as a senior data scientist and then lead data scientist.
Haiyan not only worked diligently but also did not forget her social responsibility, passionately dedicating herself to the cause of Chinese education in the UK. Since January 2005, she had voluntarily served as a Chinese language teacher for 18 years. Haiyan had actively participated in various cultural activities related to Chinese education across the UK and was honoured with the title of Outstanding Overseas Chinese Teacher by the National Cultural Bureau in 2017. Dr. Haiyan Wang has been serving as the Vice Principal of the Ealing Chinese School since June 2022. In January 2023, Dr. Haiyan Wang represented Ealing Chinese School at the 5th Headteachers’ Forum of the Association for the Promotion of Chinese Education in the UK.
