Anne's Life Story

Born

Anne will be hugely missed by so many who loved her for her generosity, huge heart and sense of fun. She was always laughing, the life and soul of every party - the first one to jump into any adventure and the last person on the dance floor. Anne had a deep sense of empathy and fought for so many good causes. She was anti brexit, anti Tory, pro LGBTQ+, pro immigration and a big supporter of the NHS. She became a fierce political activist in recent years and was frequently found protesting against fascism outside the houses of commons.

Anne was warm and hospitable, demonstrated by the number of friends she had - of all ages. She was taken from us far too soon but leaves a lasting mark on our lives. Her spirit and love for life live on in her daughters and grandchildren, who benefited from her amazing patience for teaching, her joy for literature, music, dancing and fashion. Most of all, she was brave and incredibly funny, right to the end. We loved her and we will miss her always.

I met Anne on a few occasions when visiting my cousin Stuart in London. She was a beautiful soul with a warm heart. She made my sister and I feel so welcomed and said she loved to hear our Welsh accents which made her think of home. I’ve been following her journey on Facebook and was so sorry and saddened to hear she had passed away. I remember her as being loved by so many people and always with a huge smile. Love to Brian and the family xxx

I met Anne like many through piano lessons. Anne was such a warm and beautiful woman, who showed nothing but kindness to me. She was encouraging and patient in lessons. We visited Anne & Brian at their home in Mallorca. We have such lovely memories of us all playing rounders on the beach together with our children.

Carole Mcdermott18 Aug 2024

I met Anne is London pub after an NHS March. We bonded and shared a good laugh. Despite an invite to visit, we never made it to see her again, but kept in touch via Facebook. A truly inspirational lady, a role model for doing what is right, to stand up and be counted. So sorry she couldn’t win this fight, but her spirit and legacy will always be here. Sending love to all her family and friends.

Sending our heartfelt condolences to Brian, Lauren and Bethan. Anne was loved and cherished so much around our Walworth community. She had an amazing smile and laugh. When she would visit the Lion with Brian for a cheeky glass of wine she captured everyone’s attention. She was a very beautiful, a very special lady and we will miss her very much.

I knew Anne as my piano teacher, who always let me take two lollipops if I made an effort. I still love piano music deeply and am so grateful for the part she played in my life. She was always smiling and full of life. As a teenager I remember her coming over for a BBQ and having a wrestling match with her in the garden! She was truly effervescent and vivacious. Sending all my love to the Juliffs. X

My heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved her. Anne was everything any of us could ever hope to be – compassionate, loyal, fair, loving, passionate, fun, intelligent and witty. She will be sorely missed and it was an immense privilege to have known her and been inspired by her.

Joe & Adam19 Aug 2024

Dear Anne, we’re not sure if you ever knew how much of an impact you’d have on us ever since we moved in next door to you both just over 2 years ago. I still remember you hanging around while our things were being unloaded. “I got a message on the building chat that there’d been a delivery for me” you’d said as you introduced yourself to me. Never really knew if there was a parcel 😉 but you did ask us to come around for a drink once we had finished with the boxes. Just when buyers remorse was starting to creep in, your invitation for a drink (and 4 more) led to an incredible hangover the next day. That definitely wasnt the last time either with more hangovers and dancing in each others living rooms – it’s been great. We wished that we could’ve had you and Brian over again one last time… You were a fighter and we know you would’ve given it your everything to beat it. We hate that it won. “Don’t have any fun without me!” you’d chime as we left your flat. We wont, and we’ll always remember your spirit, heart and vivaciousness because no one could do it quite like the way you did, Anne. Joe & Adam

Lauren JuliffReply19 Aug 2024

Ha, this rings so true! Having fun without her was always a terrible betrayal in Mum’s eyes. Thanks, Joe and Adam. Lauren x

Karen Grogan19 Aug 2024

Not sure where to start….so sad and heartbroken for you all Brian, Lauren, Bethan and her cherished grandies… Robert and I met you all in the Halifax days, but more so when you opened your home to us for a few weeks when Robert joined Rochdale…our Katie was only a baby, so 3 extra people in the household! No problem…she did everything to look after us… Gosh we had some good times…a character she was, so full of love, life and laughter…and we did laugh!! Never forget Christmas and her rendition of Elton John on the piano!! And yes literally on the piano, one leg hoisted up on the keyboard… Anne stood firm for what she believed in and loyal to the core.. So glad we had Anne in our lives. We send you our love and hugs and hope your beautiful memories of Anne help you through this saddest of times….much love to you all Robert and Karen Grogan ❤️

How very sad to hear that Anne has passed away.  I followed her posts on Twitter, especially during Brexit, and we discovered that we were both born Anne Williams & Welsh too. My Dad’s family was from Pontypridd! It would have been fun to have met her indeed.  Now I discover that we both have a daughter called Lauren ! These coincidences are precious and my heart goes out to you Lauren. Dear family, your Mum was quite an amazing person and although I only knew her via Twitter, reading her posts was like reading messages from a friend.  This news has saddened me greatly and she will be sorely missed.  Sending you love, prayers and lots of courage. Anne ( Williams Bonnet )

Such sad news to hear, my condolences to all the family. I met Anne through Peckham Sponsors Refugees and we laughed a lot together. I decorated and helped prepare a house for our Syrian visitors back in 2019 and when they arrived we giggled our way through taking the family on their first bus trip to Acre Lane’s Lidl! Anne was an incredibly positive woman who laughed and smiled so much. I loved spending time with her. Thank you Anne for always championing the underdog. X

Lauren JuliffReply20 Aug 2024

Thanks for sharing! I remember mum talking about this xx

Heelah Schoham20 Aug 2024

Anne and I met at a hairdressers’ Salon in Peckham towards the end of 2016. I had by then bored anyone I knew with my anti Brexit rants, so imagine my delight when the beautiful blonde woman sat next to me in the salon launched into one. I would have embraced her if it hadn’t been for the bleach on my hair. We became friends as of that day and being friends with Anne earned me newfound respect from our shared hairdresser who simply adored her. On the too few occasions I spent in Anne’s company (having left London end of 2017), I noticed that she had that effect on people. Anne was utterly charming and yet her charm was borne out of genuine warmth, kindness and interest in others.. Many of you here knew Anne much better than I ever did. You were lucky. She was imo a thoroughly good person and her goodness extended to fighting for justice as well caring deeply for the people in her life. May that the Anne essence continue to bless you all and provide a modicum of comfort for the horrible loss you suffered. I will never forget Anne. May she rest in peace .

Mum was a lifelong Labour supporter and was thrilled to see Labour back in power before she died. She had interacted with London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, online and was happy to meet him not long ago.

Elaine Bannon23 Aug 2024

I met Anne 6 years ago at The Walrus hostel, on a solo trip I took to London. I was alone, she welcomed me to join her for a drink and we chatted about life, love, music, people, and everything else under the sun. She was such a shining light, a pure beacon of love and acceptance. The world will be a darker place without her.

Lauren24 Aug 2024

I met Anne through the Women’s Institute at Nunhead. It was an absolute privilege to get to know her, and she really inspired me. She was always so interested in people, whatever their walk of life. She was very passionate about the campaigns and the camaraderie of the WI. I know this is only a short message but I will genuinely remember Anne forever. I hope that whatever I’m doing, for the WI or for activism, or for women, I’ll remember that Anne would have approached it with laughter and determination.

Claire Clegg26 Aug 2024

It has taken me a while to even look at this page! I met Anne at an Anti Brexit march in Manchester. Somehow we never quite caught up with the main march that day but we didn’t stop talking. All I can say is that was the beginning of the most beautiful friendship and I truly truly wish I had had her in my life longer. Anne was headstrong and single minded in her support for justice in whatever form it came was insatiable. I volunteer at at Foodbank and she would ask me anonymously about individuals. Next day I would find £50 in my bank account to pass on. We shared so much for 15 years and she was an amazing role model totally dedicated to her family, she will be missed more than I can say.

KEN & MARIA We met Anne 10 years ago when we moved into the block, it wasn’t long before we met them both down the Nags Head pub for a drink and a laugh with the pair of them. This become quite a regular thing and Anne and Brian were such great fun to be around and made us feel so welcome. Anne will be sadly missed.

Jo Mcivor27 Aug 2024

I met Anne in 2016 through campaigning against Brexit, and we became firm friends. Over the next few years we marched together, we drank together, and we laughed together. During my own cancer battle she supported me immensely, because that’s just who she was. She was the epitome of true friendship and that is so rare in todays world. I’m very grateful and privileged to have been a part of her life. I will miss her presence for the rest of my life.

I am so sorry about the loss of your wonderful Mum. I have so many lovely, and usually hilarious, memories of Anne from my youth. Anne and Brian always welcomed me into their home as a teenager, hosting sleepovers and revision days, teaching me how to vacuum, and even tolerating our moaning when we wanted them to turn down the music so we could go to bed! They were always happy to host and took such an interest in everyone, Anne made everyone feel special and welcome. Visiting us at Uni was always a hoot. Your Mum was inspirational, incredible and simply lovely. Sending huge love to you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. Anne used to be one of our neighbours in South London. She was a very warm and open person, always keen on chatting about politics, live, … I’ll remember also the cookies she used to bake during the pandemic and our fun online quizzes. My thoughts and my heart will be with you all tomorrow. I knew Anne most as Lauren and Bethan’s vivacious, fun-loving mum who quite simply ate life up. No matter what she did, from politics to piano teaching to partying, she did it with passion and a sense of fun that I admired deeply. We can all learn from her bravery and determination to make the most out of life and I hope that her success in doing this brings you all comfort. Lauren, Bethan it was obvious that she absolutely adored being your mum and she was so very proud of both of you. I’m so sorry that I cannot be there tomorrow, but I will be watching. Sending lots of love, Angie xxx

Anne was such a gem, a neighbour we met upon moving to Camberwell fields 8 years ago at a Gin night. She was one to stand up for what she believed in, always keen for a good time and had a lust for life that was infectious.  The last messages I exchanged with Anne were pure positivity following her transplant and well wishes for our upcoming journey into parenthood.  Our thoughts are with Brian and the rest of Anne’s family as they grieve her loss and celebrate such a wonderful woman.  With so much love from Molly, Noah & Baby Sunny Xx

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London1 Sep 2024

I am so deeply sad to hear that Anne has passed away. Anne and I became friends via twitter in recent years – she would often comment on my social media posts, and I enjoyed reading her views on all sorts for things. She had a strong sense of social justice and was an ally to many minority communities. Anne believed that London’s diversity is our strength, and something to be embraced and celebrated. She also had a great sense of humour. Not only was Anne an active campaigner on social media, but she took the time to show up on marches, rallies and events and show her support to causes that mattered to her. Some months ago, at a Labour party event, a woman introduced herself to me, and mentioned she followed me on social media. We had a chat, and then she told me her name. My team and I knew immediately who she was. Sometimes that’s not a good thing – on more than one occasion we’ve quickly had to flag such things with my police protection team! But in this case, I was thrilled to meet Anne in person, and we had a great conversation and took a photo together. She was as kind and funny in person as she was on twitter. What I didn’t have the chance to say was in a world where the commentary on social media can be awful and toxic, Anne was a shining light and brightened up my day and gave me a bit of inspiration to keep going on many occasions over the years. I will miss her. Whilst I am so sorry to hear that Anne has left us, I am grateful that I knew her and so pleased that we managed to meet in person. My heart goes out to Brian, Lauren and Bethan, to her loved ones and all who knew her.

We have hardly ever met a person who has grown so close to our hearts in such a short time as Anne. From the first moment we met Anne, there was friendship. We will miss this great person very much and wish Brian and the family all the best and lots of strength to overcome this great loss. Los Pinos will never be the same without you. Unfortunately we have a family matter that we need to attend to on Monday night and we can not make it personally. ❤️‍

Ashley Jones1 Sep 2024

I met Anne through Brian through rugby probably 20 years ago in the North East. She was vivacious, intelligent, funny, strong minded, logical and especailly passionate about her causes – Brexit, immigration, politics etc. She was a force of nature pursuing rights for all and championed immigrants displaced from their homes/countries. She was the perfect wife for Brian, such a lovely lady & great company – we enjoyed (all too brief) great times together. I’ll never forget that her favourite dessert was “Coffee Affogato” and attached is the picture that I sent her on Twitter when she was in hospital. Sadly, I never got to share this dessert with her. She fought hard to be cured and when in hospital she we shared correspondence on her progress. My wife and I were devastated to hear of her sad passing just a short few weeks ago. So shocked, that I kept saying to myself that people like Anne never die, they live forever. They say that we should not be sad at their passing but happy that we had the time with them. We were lucky to have met Anne and we’re so happy to have our memories of her . To Brian, her girls and her wider family – I have no idea of how you deal with Anne’s loss but God Bless you all, and we hope that throughout time your memories remain vivid. All our love Ashley & Kim X

Cookie ❤️…That was how we called Anne in our household. We were next door neighbours in East Dulwich.  Anne was there for me when my kids were born and babies.  She helped me go through these sometimes challenging moments, by being present, supportive and just a bubble of oxygen and light, and positivity and fun.  We, at times, cried and laughed in each other’s arms. I have thought often about Anne since but had not seen her in too long.  Life Always seem too busy…I wish now we could share one more bottle of wine and cry and laugh one more time on each other’s arms. We love you Anne.  Lots of  love to you Brian, your girls Lauren & Bethan, the grandkids and the whole family.

I’m sorry i can’t be there today in person with you but will be thinking of you all. Anne was such a lovely person, as all of the comments on here attest to. I didn’t see her often but whenever I did she was always so fun and welcoming, and showed such an interest. Such a warm, genuine person, you don’t meet many people like that, and I feel very lucky that I did. I can’t imagine how much you’ll miss her but hope you can take lots of comfort in knowing how many people’s lives she touched. Lots of love to you all xxx Emma xxx

We are all sending our love and support from Mallorca to ALL Anne’s family. We had the privilege to be their next door neighbours ever since we moved to Mallorca over 15 years ago and we couldn’t have had a better ones. My daughter called her antie Anne but she was more like grandmother to her, knowing her since she was born and we loved her so very much. Anne loved coming to Mallorca and I loved her being her next door and was always looking forward their visits as it brightened up our days. I loved spending our mornings chatting over a coffee (with fresh milk in hers of course 🙂 ) to late nights over dinners. I won’t never forget our totally sober nights of dancing in her lounge, her reading a stories to my daughter when she was little, laughing with her, or how happy I made her by bringing fresh donuts to her when I went to Lidl. She was such a warm hearted, generous, giving, sympathetic, funny and loving person, I am so happy she was part of my life for so long. She was a fighter and I never doubted she won’t make the treatment, as her, I truly believed she will go through this and I was looking forward having her next door in Autumn. Life isn’t fair sometimes but I can only hope and believe she had found a peace. I will miss her so much ad she will always have a very special place in my heart ! Love you Anne !!!!!

Joanna Swift (Swifty)2 Sep 2024

Anne was my dear friend Lauren’s mum and my overriding memory is of someone who was effortlessly cool, funny and kind, someone who was so interested in Lauren’s friends and how we grew together over the years. I first met Anne and Brian 22 years ago when they hosted a party at their house in Newcastle for our gang – a motley crew of 20 somethings who loved to party. At this stage of our lives our parents rarely featured but I was reassured by Lauren that Anne and Brian were genuinely happy to host. I remember just how generous they were, and how keen they were to get to know us. They became part of our friend group and a constant presence from then on. Anne and Brian moved to London as we all settled down and had families of our own. Anne was a warm and comforting support during these days. When we all had no idea how to parent small children, she would offer advice, but only when asked, and most of the time would patiently listen and reassure us that we were doing our best. In more recent days I have been inspired by Anne’s activism and how she has used her voice to raise many important issues. Anne was a shining example of strong female leadership and I loved hearing about how she was making a mark and not standing back! I watched just how much Anne loved Lauren, Bethan and Lucy, and their children and it was so obvious to me just how proud she was of them and all they achieved. I feel lucky to have known Anne and will always be thankful she was part of my life. My heart goes out to all of their family but I know Anne’s many gifts – her generosity, wisdom, activism and sense of fun will live on through them.

Judith2 Sep 2024

Anne was not only the beloved grannie to our shared grandchildren, she was a good and loving friend to me. She touched the lives of so many people, leaving us all bereft and wondering, where do we go from here, without her? There are not many people who can be described as genuinely good, but Anne is in that very special club. I will always miss her but will be cheered when I look at the superb legacy she leaves behind – her wonderful daughters and her beautiful grandchildren.

Laura Mallows2 Sep 2024

Met Anne at a party at their house in Leeds. I asked her what part of Scotland was she from? Lots of giggles when I learnt she was from Wales. Was always rubbish at accents!!! We became good friends & met up when she moved to Newcastle upon Tyne. We were going to London to see War Horse & Anne saw my post on Facebook. She phoned me & arranged to meet us at a pub in Covent Garden. That was Anne-seizing the day!! We met up, had a lovely couple of hours-chatting & laughing. Nearly missed the start of War Horse. That was the last time I saw my beautiful, generous & memorable friend. A loss to this world.

Mike and Kat Holmes3 Sep 2024

We first met Anne like many people have at a social gathering, where drinks were definitely involved. The year we had all moved into the Camberwell Fields development we had a neighbours’ Christmas drinks, which spilled into the lobby of Anne and Brian’s building, which led to the stragglers at the end being welcomed into their home for afters. Anne was the hostess with the mostess, the centre of the action and the life of the party. However, she always made time to really get to know us, she’d be deeply interested in our lives and had that rare quality of making you feel like she is actually listening to you.  We connected with Anne even more during the covid lockdowns, whilst we were all isolating, somehow we managed to get know each other more over Zoom in our many neighbours “pub quizzes”. When the restrictions were over, we were able to meet again in person, we made sure we all made the most of it.  But it wasn’t all just parties and drinks. Anne was there for us when we needed her. When expecting our first child, she and Brian were there for support. On the day of the arrival Anne was there to meet us in the car park, reassuring Kat and helping her into the car, before Brian drove us to the hospital. When we returned home, with our bundle of joy, Anne had prepared us lots of meals to stick in the freezer and help us get through those difficult first weeks. We will always remember this and make she we tell this story to our eldest often.  There will not be anyone else quite like Anne, but we hope that everybody gets to have a neighbour and a friend that is like her.  Our hearts go out to Brian, Lauren, Bethan and the family. We will always miss you Anne, with love from Mike and Kat

Dan3 Sep 2024

I met Anne when I was just 17. I had just started dating her daughter Lauren and I was probably a little nervous about meeting the woman who would later become my mother-in-law. I needn’t have been. Anne welcomed me into her family with open arms from the moment we met. This sums Anne up – she was the warmest, most generous and hospitable person I have ever known. Her Christmas day parties back in Darras Hall were the stuff of legend. Every year, over 100 people would turn up at her home to sample her famous champagne cocktails – on Christmas day no less. When Lauren and I had our first child Jonah, Anne and Brian moved to London to help us, saving us a fortune on childcare and showering our children with the kind of love and attention a childminder would find it hard to replicate. We will always be grateful for this and for the role she played bringing up both our children, who loved her dearly and are devastated by her passing. Almost 200 people attended Anne’s funeral yesterday, from all corners of the UK. This is no surprise. Anne loved to be around people and had more friends than anyone else I know, of all ages and from all walks of life. Anne was a fierce campaigner for social justice and always spoke up for minority groups. She was an anti-Brexit activist, an anti-fascist, a big supporter of the NHS, and was frequently found on rallies or protesting outside the House of Parliament. Anne adored fashion, dancing, literature, music – she was stylish, principled, great fun and very funny. She was the life and soul of every party she attended and always the last person to want to call it a night. Anne was very opinionated. We had fierce debates and sometimes we would disagree or clash. But that is what made her so interesting. Some people make outdated jokes about mother-in-laws. I was proud to call Anne mine. I hugely admired her and loved her very much. She has left a gaping hole in our lives and we will all miss her terribly. May her memory be a blessing.

Really the most sad new of this year. Anne, the brave Anne, always smiling…. Our sincere condolences to Brian and Family. We will pray to God for her soul. Good memories.

Deborah Houghland4 Sep 2024

I met Anne whilst campaigning against Brexit. From the moment we met, it felt like I’d known her my entire life. We shared the same values and a fierce determination to right the wrongs of Brexit. I was proud to stand alongside her on marches and outside parliament, where we were often confronted by the far right. I grew up close to Anne’s hometown in Wales, and we had a shared experience of growing up in a tough environment. We would often compare notes, and agreed that our childhood experiences gave us the courage to face off the likes of Tommy Robinson and his supporters. Anne was incredibly generous, and both her and Brian were so kind and welcoming whenever my husband and I came to visit. They even allowed me to stay in their stunning home in London while they were away in Mallorca. I will never forget this kindness or the amazing times we spent together. The last time I saw Anne was a year ago this month. She’d just received the news that a transplant was possible, and we celebrated with our close group of friends on a rooftop in London. The sun was shining and we made a toast to the future. Later that day we went to Abba Voyage and danced the night away. At the end of the evening we all rushed to our separate platforms to catch our trains home. Little did I know that it would be the last time I’d see Anne. If only I’d ran after her and cwtched her tightly, and never let her go. Instead we waved and blew kisses, thinking there would be many more wonderful times ahead of us. It breaks my heart that I’ll never share another evening with Anne, or hear her voice or read her daily messages. Life feels so empty without her. Attending Anne’s funeral was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I cried more than I ever thought possible. Anne’s family showed such love, courage and devotion; she would be so incredibly proud of them all. Anne was without doubt the most vibrant, funny, loving, stylish, compassionate and determined woman I’ve ever met. I will miss her for eternity and love her just as long. Debs xxxxx
