Subhash Anand

I am so sad to hear the news of Subhash’s passing. I enjoyed his company immensely on several occasions, most fondly during one of Indira’s yoga retreats. He made me laugh so much. My thoughts and prayers are with Indira and all the family at this very sad time. Robbie Butler

Hi Indira, Paras and Pyle, we are so sorry to hear the news. Although we hadn’t seen Subhash for a long time we have great memories of him. In particular, in France, at the yoga retreat, when he would sneak up to our room most evenings for a gin and tonic before dinner. Or, when he drank a huge quantity of salt water without being sick and so wasn’t allowed breakfast! He was a kind and true gentleman.  We are currently in Australia and are deeply sorry not to be able to attend the funeral in person but we will tune in remotely.We send our condolences and best wishes to you all at this very sad time. Dear Payal, Paras and Indira, We are with you in our hearts and minds during this difficult time. We will unfortunately not be able to attend or tune in on the 9th of January, and would have loved to. We have very fond memories of Subhash from our time with you in India in 2004, for Paras and Ramita’s wedding. Subhash was always very affectionate and funny. And he was such a good singer and musician! We were impressed by the music instrument he played at the wedding (an Indian harmonium?), and by his mastery. Our deep condolences for your great loss. I loved Subhash; we always enjoyed chatting about science. He was fascinating to talk with. Every time Payal and Ben would have a do, Subhash would be there, and I would make a beeline for him! My condolences to all the family. This is a great loss because he was a great man.

Dear Indira, I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Anand. Please accept my most sincere and heartfelt condolences during this time of immense loss. Professor Anand was a truly exceptional person, and his passing is felt profoundly. I will always remember him with the greatest respect and affection. I have particularly cherished memories of his incredible kindness. I first arrived in the UK in October 1996, and he generously picked me up from Manchester Airport himself. That initial act of warmth set the tone for my entire time in Bolton, where he continued to be a constant source of guidance and support. His passion for his work and for teaching was inspiring to all who knew him. He was not just a professor, but a mentor who genuinely cared for his students. Even after many years, I vividly remember the last time my wufe and I had the pleasure of meeting and having lunch with him and you in Beijing, about 15 years ago. The world has lost a brilliant mind and a wonderfully kind soul. My thoughts are with you and your family. May you find strength and comfort in your memories of his remarkable life. It is an unimaginable loss for the family. My wife and I extend our deepest condolences to Indira and the family. For me, the loss feels deeply personal, as it does for so many of Subhash’s close friends and well‑wishers across the world. We will forever miss his kindness, his firm dedication, his delightful sense of humour and the great humanity that made him truly exceptional. We have lost not only a remarkable personality but also a lovable legend and one of the world’s most distinguished scientists. Though he is no longer with us, his gracious nature, his compassion, his dedicated service to charitable organisations such as the Textile Institute and his extraordinary contributions to textile science will remain etched in our hearts and memories. I feel honoured to have known Subhash. As fellow academics, I knew him for many years. He was external examiner to several of my Ph.D. students and was always very kind, understanding, fair, supportive and enthusiastic in his assessments of their work. He was just the same when assessing applicants’ submissions for Textile Institute Professional Qualifications.  As chairman of the Professional Qualifications Committee, I always valued his wise and informed counselling and contributions to its deliberations. He will be very sorely missed.  I also had the pleasure of spending time with him at several conferences. He always presented his papers in an engaging and entertaining way. Socially, he was a wonderful witty raconteur with a warm, friendly personality that endeared him to all that he met. We have, very sadly, lost an another of the Textile academic “greats” of our time. I send sincerest condolences to all his family.

Wonderful memories of visitng West End Avenue with Paras after a school. Subhash always had larger-than-life welcome, and his humour would have us – and Indira’s eyes – rolling about within minutes. His amazing achievements in life spanned family, academics and industry, as well as cities and continents. Fondest memories and deepest condolences from all the Braybrooks. 

Dear Indira, Paras & Ramita, Payal & Ben, My family and I send you lots of strength, courage, and love as you say goodbye to Subhash. When I think of Subhash, the first thing that comes to mind is his infectious laugh, his unique jokes, his love of life and music. During our trip to India, I always saw him talking to everyone in the same way, whether they were street kids or dignitaries, and that is what I will remember about him: his immense faith in human beings. Professor Dr. Subhash Chandra Anand MBE was not only a pioneering scholar in Technical Textiles, but also a deeply humane mentor whose guidance extended far beyond academia. As my MSc and PhD supervisor, his wisdom, generosity, and unwavering support shaped my academic journey and continued long after formal supervision ended. He helped quietly, decisively, and without seeking recognition. I am watching the funeral service remotely from Bangladesh and feel honoured to be able to pay my respects. My sincere condolences to Professor Anand’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time. The textile world has lost a giant, and many of us have lost a guiding light. His legacy lives on through his research, his students, and the values he instilled. With deepest respect and gratitude.

Dear Subhash a great friend whom I met in 1963 when we were doing our graduate studies at UMIST.Besides being an accomplished scientist and an educator ,he was a great musician.Everytime we met wether in Manchester or here in the USA we will have music sessions.Subhash was much more involved in it which is known for his recorded ghazals and bhajans.I cherish the recordings which I listen to everytime I think of our times together either in Bolton or Manchester.He was a very generous soul and friends could rely on his help anytime anybody needed it. I will surely miss his company as a great friend and a fellow professional. My deepest sympathies to Indira and the for their loss and pray for his soul to rest in peace.

Had the honour of being taught by him at Bolton and what I learned from him helped through my entire career. So enthusiastic and knowledgeable and always with a smile. A great leader and pioneer of the textile industry for so many years. A great credit to Bolton (now University, then BIT). Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Subhashji was a cheerful person spreading joy everywhere through his jokes, music and presence. I am grateful to him for teaching us bhajans. God bless him in his journey forward. Lots of strength to the family.
