Timothy Walby

Tim was a wonderful brother-in-law. I had the great honor of spending time with Tim in Ireland for the British Open and of course some Rugby matches in Cardiff and London. I will miss our Sunday FaceTime chats discussing our kids, Rugby and our dogs, maybe not in that order. You will always be in our hearts and I promise to always keep your sister feeling loved, safe and secure forever, goodbye Tim safe travels and say hi to Mum and Bill, love Chase

Tim You were a down to earth and thoroughly decent person. You were also a true friend for more than forty years. I shall miss you greatly. Rest in peace. With love Colin

Tim was one of the first people I met in Britain. Despite the fact my English was very limited, I felt completely at ease with him. He was kind, funny, sharp, empathic and I immediately could feel his honesty. I will never forget his kindess! Such a great loss!

Tim, You called me the memory man when I mentioned things which you had forgotten ( like where we watched the 1995 Rugby World Cup final ). I shall use it now to recall so many experiences we shared but it will only be token compensation for losing my oldest friend. Sleep Well.

Tim You will be greatly missed by many people. You were taken too soon but be at peace now.

Tim You were a great bloke. We were friends for over 50 years. You were the best man at our wedding. We experienced so much. I really miss you. Let’s hope we meet again some day.

Your sister Cathryn is my beloved ‘adopted’ daughter in Florida and I grieve with her in your passing. She always talked lovingly about you and the family. May God bless you and your family.

Tim, You were my best friend from the age of 5. We lived on the same Street in Tredegar. We shared an idyllic boyhood, roaming the neighbourhood, climbing trees, fishing with nets in the river (which was a stream in the Summer and a torrent in the Winter). By tagging along with my brother Ken and his friends (who were 4 years older), we went further and to more risky places than most 8/9 year olds. Parental supervision was more relaxed in those days. Reunited with Malcolm in Comp., we all played for the school rugby team and were unbeaten for 3 consecutive years. You and I lost touch when we all left Tredegar to go to University and I bitterly regret that. When I heard of your passing, it brought back what we had shared and what we have all lost. “Go gentle into that good night”

Dear Tim, We can still hear your awesome laughter.  We loved walking down the road and seeing you on your bike, or in your front garden fixing something or about to go to the market to buy the ingredients for one of those memorable meals that Jojo was always talking about.  Your energy was so contagious and we always loved hearing about what you three were up to.   Thank you for embracing and caring for our family.   We will always keep you in our hearts.  You will always be our neighbour and friend.  You made our little bit of the world a kinder and more generous place.  Your Welsh wildflowers in the side garden will be in bloom soon and we will remember you. Heartbroken, writing this. As a family, we all hold such lovely memories of you and the times we spent together. I can still hear your laughter and hope that will never fade. Keeping you and the family in our thoughts and prayers. Amir, Tina, Chris & James.

I met Tim and Jojo as they slept on the floor of a slow boat in southern China in 1986. We were headed along the river in an overnight boat to Yangshuo, where we all stayed in the only backpacker hotel in the area. When one backpacks for a full year, minimizing what is carried becomes essential, yet Tim devoted precious space to a large radio capable of picking up international FIFA games. “Priorities!” he explained, flashing his endearing grin. That was the year of the World Cup. And it was made especially memorable for the town of Yangshuo when Tim subsequently organized a football match between the foreign backpackers, who spoke a vast array of languages, and some football-loving locals. That game created respect, joy, camaraderie, and a level of international cooperation that diplomats would envy. Diego Maradona might have been the captain of the Argentinian winning team that year, but Tim Walby captained a less-talented, though no less enthusiastic, hastily-assembled team on the other side of the world in a small-but-mighty act of global collaboration, and that made him a winner by any standard.

Tim was a fun & familiar neighbour to me & active member of our community. He was a very kind man & had a good sense of humour. Often made me laugh with a passing comment as he cycled past or walked Chewie! he’ll be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to his family & my lovely Noeghbkur’s JoJo & David. Dear Tim – A wonderful neighbour and friend for over 29 years. Our boys – my Joe and your Joe & David played together and had sleepovers – all very raucous. A proud Welshman indee – years ago Wales must have reached a final – six nations ! And it was being shown only on Sky – remember Tim knocking on door to see if we had sky – alas we did not! A fantastic racantour and what a wit. A Welshman yes but a Penge boy too! Remember chatting one day when he was in the garden and I remarked about the cottages and all the ‘newbies’ and I said remember whenwe were the young guns and he said we’re now the old farts! Wonderful man! RIP Tim xx
