Tong Lan Wong (nee Liew) was born on 4 February 1938 in a seaside town in Sumatra. She was the fifth of seven children. The family moved to Penang, Malaysia in 1947. In 1964, Tong Lan travelled by boat to the UK. The journey took one month.

Tong Lan then started training to be a registered midwife, a career which she enjoyed until she retired. She started off at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington as a midwife before progressing to being a sister at Watford General Hospital and following that, the nearby St Helier Hospital.

It was during her time at Watford that she met her husband to be, Yit Fah Wong. Tong Lan and Yit Fah married in 1975. In 1983 they moved from New Malden to their final residence in Cheam. From that time onwards they enjoyed many trips to China which only ceased due to Covid.

Tong Lan and Yit Fah enjoyed a 46 year marriage and were well remembered for their mahjong parties for which Tong Lan would always make delicious Chinese cakes.

Aunty Susan, as we fondly knew her, made the most wonderful snowball cakes and peanut cookies. She and Uncle Yit Fah were gracious hosts, opening their home to us for so many memorable dinner parties. Their kindness was unending—especially when my sister was unwell in the hospital, and they made sure we always had home-cooked meals to keep us going. We are grateful for all the Christmases and Chinese New Years we shared together, and for the years when we were able to take over hosting. Aunty Susan was always cheerful and good-spirited. Even during her time in the nursing home—when she no longer recognised us—she would still light up when we visited. She loved music, dancing, and clapping along, and she even welcomed our dog Arlo with gentle pats and treats. The staff often told us how delightful she was. Now, she rests peacefully with God and with her beloved husband—whole, restored, and held in love once again. ❤️

Dearest Aunty, it’s hard to say goodbye to someone who had been such an integral part of my life from the time I arrived in London. I was aged 18 then and now I am in my 70s. I am grateful for your love and support. You even delivered my first born, a daughter, who is also your first great niece! My younger daughter, during her final year in university, was staying with you and uncle. She had enjoyed the time with you both. There were so many Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations during your young days. You loved making Chinese cakes whereas uncle cooking the meals. All of us enjoyed eating especially the mochis and the mung bean cakes. In later years you couldn’t recognise my family and friends. Nevertheless during each visit to the care home, you were always cheerful, chatty and singing at times. You would always ask us when will be our next visit. Aunty, you will always be in our hearts. Gone, but not forgotten. We miss you and uncle. Rest in Peace. Lots of love from Chiew Lee

We are sad to hear of the loss of Aunty Susan wife of our Kiew-Kiew Yit Fah. I visited them many times in New Malden/Cheam and stayed with them too. Kiew-Kiew was a wonderful cook and Aunty Susan was very good in making all the Chinese delicacies. They always visited me in Kuala Lumpur without fail whenever they went to China and used to bring me some Lap Cheong from China when they came over. On their last visit before Covid, Aunty Susan was already more frail and she told me that she cannot remember a lot of things and her memory was going. It was sad to see her like that. May the soul of Aunty Susan rest in peace. Mariana

My heart feels deeply saddened to hear of your passing, aunty Tong Lan (三姑). Even though we did not have many chances to spend time together, and I regret not being able to visit you and Uncle Yit Fah in the UK as I always wished, the moments we shared remain precious to me. I still remember the kindness, warmth, and joyful spirit that you and Uncle carried when we met in KL, and again during our brief time together in Guangzhou. Your gentle presence and loving nature have left a lasting imprint on my heart. May your soul find eternal peace and be embraced with light and serenity. You will be remembered with love. May Aunty rest in God’s everlasting peace.

Amen.

Rest in peace Aunty Susan. I hope I did you proud today. I tried my best to give you the send off that you deserve. I miss you so much and it is only really becoming real now that I am home and held it together to make sure your funeral went well. I hope you are singing in heaven and that Uncle is there with you watching The Twilight Zone on TV. I can’t believe you are both gone. It seems very unreal. Thank you for being such a great aunty, and for the time we spent together. ❤️
