About Southern Cemetery

Southern Cemetery is one of the most significant burial grounds in Europe, being the largest municipal cemetery in the United Kingdom and the second largest in Europe. Opened in 1879, it covers an extensive site in Chorlton-cum-Hardy and contains six Grade II listed buildings, including four chapels. The cemetery has separate sections for Anglican, Roman Catholic, Nonconformist, Jewish, and Muslim (Plot ZZ, wooden-vault construction) faiths. Notable burials include Sir Matt Busby, L.S. Lowry, John Rylands, Sir John Alcock, Tony Wilson, and Billy Meredith. It also features The Meadow, a dedicated natural burial area where no headstones are permitted and only floral tributes for seven days after burial. It holds a Green Flag Award.

Grave lease

Grave leases are provided from 99 years, with extensions usually available from the cemetery.

Who can be buried here?

Anyone can be buried at Southern Cemetery, but grave prices depend on residency. Lower resident rates typically apply to families living in Manchester, with higher fees for non-residents. Residency rules are complex so please check with your funeral arranger.
