The land was purchased in 1930 from Captain Thomas Nuttall; Wardley Hall, the Grade II listed medieval manor house that serves as the official residence of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Salford, was gifted alongside the land. The cemetery is managed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford and is listed as a locally significant heritage asset. It contains the Bishop's Circle memorial and is notable for the burial of five nurses killed in the Manchester Blitz at Salford Royal Hospital. An annual Cemetery Mass is held on the Bank Holiday Monday in late August.
